An update for Microsoft’s blogging client is now available for download, with the company making little effort to bring the refresh to the public, so far. Users leveraging Windows Live Writer in order to blog on Windows Live, Wordpress or any other similar service, now have an upgrade available designed to take the version string of their application up to 14.0.8089.726. The update offered comes in concert with additional refreshes from the software giant, but with no information available. Microsoft released Windows Live Writer Wave 3 in the first half of January 2009 with the 2009 releases of the Windows Live clients. At that time, the company collected all Windows Live applications under the Windows Live Essentials brand umbrella and indicated that the software collection was designed to extend the Windows operating system, with a focus on Windows 7, into the Cloud. The aptly named RCW 38 is one of the densest star clusters known, located some 5,500 light-years away, in the direction of the constellation Vela. The embedded cluster, termed that way because the immensely vast amounts of dust and gas that trigger star formation still envelop developing formations, is one of the structures of the Universe that was recently determined to be the source for most of the low-mass, reddish stars around today. Study Finds That Most US Students Won’t Buy Macs
Retrevo has released a new Gadgetology study revealing that US students are less into netbooks than they are into regular-sized laptops. Apple covers this niche in the market quite well, but Retrevo claims the majority of student laptop shoppers are not considering the acquisition of a Mac for their activities. According to the report, studies indicated that 34% of the US students buying laptops were planning on purchasing small, lightweight netbooks, with another 49% buying full-sized laptops, such as the Apple MacBook. Developer Berbie has released a new stable version of its route-planning software for Mac OS X, TrailRunner. TrailRunner is a route-planning app that can calculate a route for the desired distance. The software is freely available for download and can export directions onto the users' iPod. According to the release notes for TrailRunner 2.0.4, Berbie has made the software more stable, while compatibility issues have been resolved. With TrailRunner, users now get an even more detailed orientation, while keeping the workout going. Berbie has also introduced the ability to display collected workout data within the program (in recent releases of the software), matching the recordings with routes created by users. TrailRunner integrates with nikeplus.com, the online community for the Nike SportBand, and the Apple Nike+ iPod Sport Kit-running devices. Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7 to Co-Exist in 2010
While the Windows 7 client and server operating systems have already been released to manufacturing, Microsoft is set to deliver yet another 7 release of its proprietary operating system. The Redmond company is working to produce Windows Mobile 7, a version tailored to mobile phones that is planned for availability in 2010. At the same time, the software giant in collaboration with phone manufacturers have yet to make Windows Mobile 6.5 available to customers on new handsets. Recent details that surfaced reveal that Windows Mobile 7 will not replace Windows Mobile 6.5, but that the two versions of the platform will in fact co-exist on the market. AOL is suing Advertise.com for trademark infringement, with the Internet giant claiming that the name and the design are very close to its own Advertising.com and Ad.com, while also offering very similar services. AOL believes that this could arise some confusion among customers, who may believe that Advertise.com is somehow associated with the company. “Advertise.com recently commenced use of the virtually identical and confusingly similar designation Advertise.com and design in connection with the same and complimentary services as those offered by Plaintiffs under their federally-registered Advertising.com name and marks and their Ad.com name and marks,” the lawsuit filing reads. “Through its conduct, Advertise.com has created circumstances whereby members of the public and members of the relevant trade are likely to be led to incorrectly believe that Advertise.com and its services are authorized by, sponsored by, or affiliated with Plaintiffs.” The claim is somewhat shaky as, while there is some resemblance between the Advertise.com and Advertising.com names, there are few who would actually confuse the two or believe that the former is somehow associated with AOL. Wireless Internet is no doubt headed for even wider use in the coming years. Spurred by better coverage and bandwidth and, equally, by better and more portable mobile devices, Internet on the go is seeing a solid growth in most areas. A new study in the US shows wireless Internet use rising 41 percent in just one year.The study, released by Meraki, a cloud-based mesh networking company, took a sample of the devices using 10,000 of its APs across the US. The survey looked at the number and distribution of the devices in June 2, 2008 and June 1, 2009 for a 24-hour period, and showed a dramatic rise in mobile Internet use, which grew from 149,000 devices connected in 2008 to 211,000 this year, a 41 percent increase.While the overall growth is impressive, even more impressive is the growth some companies saw in this period, far outpacing the overall trend. Apple was the fastest growing company across all categories and compared to all other companies studied. The title, which was published by Ubisoft, appeared on December 8, 2004 in North America and reached European shores on March 11, the next year. Nissan North America Inc. has turned to Microsoft’s virtualization technology in order to shift server spending in reverse at two of its plants in the United States, namely Smyrna and Decherd. According to the Redmond company, the number of servers necessary to run manufacturing operations at the two locations dropped from 159 to no more than 28 after the car maker embraced Hyper-V. Yahoo BOSS Could See More Monthly Searches than Bing
Now that Yahoo Search's faith is sealed, it looks like everyone has something good to say about it. Despite not being able to gain any market share for years, Yahoo Search had some really good things going for it. One of them is the BOSS API, which allows third parties to build custom search engines using a very flexible and powerful tool that could be seeing more searches than Microsoft's entire search engine. The latest official figure is the 30 million daily queries Yahoo revealed in May. Based on the latest numbers and previous growth, TechCrunch estimates that, by now, the number of searches made using the BOSS API could match the total number of searches conducted on Bing even with the most conservative estimates. But even at 30 million daily searches, adding up to 900 million monthly queries, BOSS on its own would be the fourth largest search engine, with 6 percent of the market, as the latest numbers for Bing show the search engine seeing 1.21 billion queries in July.
